Halloween can bring some unique foot care challenges, especially with costumes and footwear that might not be the most foot-friendly. Here are some Halloween-themed podiatry care tips for a ghoulish evening: 1. Beware of Costume Footwear 👣We advise patients to choose well-fitted shoes or add insoles to costume boots or heels, which often lack support. For children, emphasise shoes that are secure for running around while trick-or-treating. 👣Consider wearing supportive inserts if wearing novelty footwear or high heels for an extended time. 2. Caution with Face Paints and Toe Nail Art 👣Halloween face paints and nail polishes can contain chemicals that irritate the skin or nails. We encourage our patients to check for skin-safe, hypoallergenic, and cruelty-free labels. 👣Remove any polish or paint thoroughly to avoid staining and keep nails healthy. 3. Sock It to 'Em 👣We remind everyone to wear moisture-wicking socks with their costumes if they're out trick-or-treating or partying. This will help prevent blisters, fungal infections, and general discomfort. 4. Pumpkin Spice Soaks for Recovery 👣After a night in uncomfortable footwear, a warm water soak with Epsom salts and a bit of pumpkin spice for a festive touch can relieve sore feet and boost blood circulation. 5. Preventing Blisters 👣We suggest applying blister prevention balms to areas where costume shoes might rub. For patients prone to blisters, we like to remind them of the importance of moleskin or bandages in areas of high friction. Onychauxis refers to the thickening of the nails, a condition that podiatrists encounter frequently. It can affect both fingernails and toenails but is more commonly seen in toenails, particularly the big toe. Causes of Onychauxis can include: 👣 Age-related changes – Older individuals are more prone to nail thickening due to reduced circulation, natural wear, and tear. 👣 Trauma – Repeated trauma to the nails (e.g., ill-fitting shoes, sports activities) can stimulate excessive nail growth and thickening. 👣 Fungal infections (onychomycosis) – Fungus can invade the nail and cause thickening, discoloration, and deformity. 👣 Underlying medical conditions – Conditions like psoriasis, eczema, or peripheral vascular disease may lead to thickened nails. 👣 Poor circulation – Conditions like diabetes can reduce blood flow to the extremities, contributing to nail deformities. In any case, it’s best to get checked by an HCPC qualified podiatrist to assess and treat the nails and help with underlying issues.
